FAQ
Frequently asked questions about the platform
Is The Bored Plan free?
Yes — browsing events is free for everyone. There's no premium tier, no paywall, no "unlock to see venue" trick. Local businesses can pay to have their business or event featured in the discover feed; that's how the app stays running.
What towns and regions does The Bored Plan cover?
Right now we focus on western North Dakota and eastern Montana — Williston, Watford City, Alexander, Arnegard, Sidney, Fairview, plus expansion into Minot, Bismarck, Fargo, Dickinson, Devils Lake, and beyond. We're also building coverage in Tulsa, Dayton OH, central Louisiana, and a handful of other underserved regions. If your town isn't covered yet, sign up and we'll prioritize where signups come from.
How do I add an event?
Sign up for a free account, then tap "Submit Event" from your profile. Add the title, date, time, venue, and a short description. Most events go live within a few minutes after a quick AI moderation check. Chambers of commerce and venues can also get a partner QR code that lets event organizers submit directly without an account.
How is The Bored Plan different from Eventbrite or Facebook events?
Eventbrite focuses on big-city ticketed events. Facebook Events is buried inside Facebook and increasingly hidden from non-followers. The Bored Plan tracks small-town community events — fish fries, library story times, high school sports, farmers markets, faith gatherings, free things to do — that don't show up on either platform. Built mobile-first for the 7pm Friday "what should we do tonight?" moment.
Can I filter for free events or family-friendly events?
Yes. The discover feed has filter chips for "Today", "This Weekend", and "Free", plus per-category chips (sports, music, faith, kids, food, etc). Each city also has dedicated landing pages — for example, /things-to-do/williston-nd/free for free events in Williston, or /things-to-do/watford-city-nd/family for family-friendly things to do in Watford City.
How do you find the events listed on The Bored Plan?
Three sources: (1) chambers of commerce, libraries, and community organizations submit them directly via partner accounts; (2) users in each town add their own; (3) we run a respectful daily scraper against city tourism sites, county calendars, and visitor bureaus to fill in the gaps. We always honor robots.txt and never log in to scrape — just public, indexable pages.
Do you have a mobile app?
The Bored Plan is a Progressive Web App (PWA). Open theboredplan.app on your phone, then "Add to Home Screen" from your browser menu — it installs like a native app, works offline for cached events, and supports push notifications. A native iOS/Android app is on the roadmap but the PWA already covers most use cases.
How do I list my business or venue?
Sign up, then tap "Advertise Your Business" from your profile. Pick a 1-week ($15), 2-week ($28), 1-month ($45), or recurring ($39/mo) ad. Your ad appears between events in the discover feed for everyone in your geo-targeted area. You can also boost a specific event for 3, 7, or 14 days to feature it at the top of the feed.
Is there a minimum age to use The Bored Plan?
Users must be 13 or older to create an account, in line with COPPA. Teen users (13–17) are subject to additional content and feature restrictions; the app filters age-appropriate events automatically based on your birthdate.
Are my events visible publicly even if I don't have an account?
Yes. Every approved event has a public URL at theboredplan.app/event/{id} that anyone can visit and share — no signup required. Each city also has a public landing page (e.g. /williston) listing upcoming events. We want events to be findable everywhere, not gated behind signups.
